interaction design
The goal of this course is to investigate diverse ways of designing interaction. Beginning from interface, students will learn other aspects of interaction, such as transaction, experience, and participation. Although this is a project-based course, students will expect to study key concepts and relevant topics in interaction design. In addition, students will have a chance to conduct design research, employ design methods, and create design artifacts through projects.
PROJECT 01-simple and usable
SIMPLIFY PROCESS OF TAKING MEDICINE
JUNG HUH
SIMPLE& USABLE
JooKyung Shin
PROBLEM
COMPLICATED!!!
Too much information, Too many words, Small texts, Black & White, Complicated Layout, Repeated Pictures of Watch
• Do not read the manual at all or reads only the first few pages
• Prefer to figure out the functions by actually trying
SIMPLIFYING METHOD
•Remove : unnecessary information, long texts in full sentences
•Hide: the info until it becomes important
•Organize : texts by putting them in a better hierarchy and alignment
•Displace
Concept
Children´s book with stuffed animals
Sketch
Final Outcome
•First page showing each button´s function and label
•Pictures replaced with an actual watch
•Taps for faster searching
•Steps explained by letters or words
•Steps written in a more succinct, better-organized way
•Each function per page
•Gradation in color for differentiating each function

Intro
Social value
Why interaction &communication?
• Our topic: social value and interaction
•Social problems = caused by lack of interaction
•Wanted: A space where people can naturally interact and share stories with others
Who are your neighbors?
•Location?
•Area?
•Transportation (bus and subway)
•Airport
Subway one compartment
•Why not living space: Strong personal space, Already positive place
•Why subway : Mostly neutral place,Strangers, Wide range of people, One small space = one compartment
Selected methods
•Town watching
•Survey
•Focus group interview
Town watching
Less communication especially in 20s-30s
•Those sitting on the elderly seats, talks a lot
•Recognize others
•existence but not interested
•People keep their ears open and start to listen when something interesting pops up
•Default face: smileless face
Survey: familiarity
Focus group interview
•About interview
•Purpose of interview: How sharing a specific experience affects people?s interaction
•While interviewing: Observe interactions among strangers while sharing same contents, time, and space
•After interview : Group discussion
Analysis
•Familiar atmosphere : People left their belongings unattended during personal interview
•Use time efficiently : People already have plans during long ride
•Each individual is different : How they react to stories, what they felt
•Naturally interested in surroundings, however try not to : Notice strange behavior and person
•Lack of motivation :
They would not intentionally look for service
Hope it comes naturally (spoon feeding)
Why need to spoon feed
•Things collected from subway case studies (town watching)
- Passengers have no motivation to interact with others among passengers
- But actually do enjoy when some form of interaction occurs
- Same phenomenon happens not just in subway but in all places
•Existence of high wall between oneself and others : Worries that someone will take advantage of him or her
•No freedom of choice : Do not participate if choices are given
•Interaction should occur naturally, but with force
Final
Joke pieces
•Working process
- Every time a person takes a seat, a fragment of joke will be told
- The fragments collectively make joke pieces intriguing people to look around
V.I.P. seat
•Working process
- A seat for a Very Important Person: each one of you could share your special story
- People could take this opportunity to boast about or wish for something special
